The vastness of PNG’s waters coupled with a navy that last capacity and logistics, PNG has a hard time monitoring waters for illegal fishermen, illegal logging and undocumented boarder entries. “It’s about training them (PNGDF), it’s about having Papua New Guineans working side-by-side the United States on their military vessels.” Mr Tkatchenko said: “The agreement means putting Papua New Guineans on US Coast Guard or Military ships in our region. “America’s presence in the Pacific through Hawaii, America Samoa, Guam sees quite a bit of traffic of their Coast Guard through the Pacific and traverse exclusive economic zones of a number of Pacific countries, and whenever that occurs there is the opportunity of those ship movements to act to help with illegal fishing.”įoreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko hailed the agreement and said it’s poised to be signed in December when the US will open their new embassy in Port Moresby in December this year.
